Aging with Domesticity?

Symptoms:

1. Sewing. (please ignore the horrible hair day). I am still learning, but look forward to making quilts (my friend and I are making one for a friend of ours) and other gifts of love for my family and friends. I find that when I'm sewing, I forget about work & all of the things I need to do (see #4). There is something about making things that is soothing to to the soul - an escape from the responsibilities of life with a wonderful end-product (unless of course I'm experimenting in which case it could be a real disaster!).

2. Cooking. I love finding & trying new recipes. Cooking Light is one of my favorite magazines - luckily, I get it free at work and tear apart my copy each month. I start by dog-earing the pages with recipes I'd like to try...disregarding the ones that look good, but have too many ingredients or anything that requires patience like letting dough rise. Then, my dear Jay and I each week plan out our menu while making our grocery list. Usually we cook at least 3 or 4 new recipes each week. I look forward to trying something new and to putting my own twist on recipes I've already tried. If a recipe is to our liking, it's ripped out of the magazine and neatly filed away in a binder full of sheet-protected, A+ recipes. Tonight, we made Peach-Spiced Pork Chops with a side of broccoli seasoned with garlic and crushed red pepper. Definitely a keeper.

3. NPR. I am an avid NPR listener. I look forward to my drive to work each morning, catching up on recent headlines and hearing wonderfully scripted stories of people's journeys in life. There is a segment that runs every so often that highlights someone's favorite sound. One day, it was a unique sound that someone made by bending a hand saw. It was a beautiful, almost eerie sound that came through my car speakers that afternoon. Nothing else. No music, no rambling of crazed disc jockeys...just a single sound that was special and beautiful enough for someone to share with the world. Makes me think about the little things in life that we all need to better savor. The smell of a spring rain. The comfort of a warm breeze....

4. Cleaning/Organizing. I can't sit down after a nice meal and let the plates sit on the table. They can't be in the sink either. They must be put away in the dishwasher or washed & dried. I can't have a coffee mark on the counter or a crumb on the coffee table without it getting under my skin. I can't have a stack of bills sitting on the table or the magazines not perfectly stacked in order of size without eyeing it until I can't stand it anymore. A pile of clothes on the floor. A blanket that's not folded. Everyone tells me that when I have children that I will change...but will I? (Please say yes)

Remedy:

Keep doing the above. It makes me happy!

Oh, it will all change someday. While you're making dinner, your two-year-old will unload the toy box and pull his/her books off the shelf. As soon as you're done cleaning the living room, you'll find her in the kitchen taking everything out of the tupperware drawer. So, the coffee stain on the counter will stay there until after said toddler is in bed. I clean my countertops during naps and after bed. The paper pile-up is always out of control. I say, buy identify theft protection w/your insurance company and have all your bank statements, online bill pay, etc. sent to your email account. You can print out and file as they come or print out quarterly or yearly. Use recycled paper to print. In the end, you're more eco-friendly and save on the pile-up. If I could get my husband on board with this, we'd be all set. Also, there are places online where you can sign-up to get rid of junk mail that gets pile up too. Check out Idealbite.com for that tip.
